Stainless Steel

Stainless steel sheet is a sheet whose base is iron, but it also has other alloys and other elements are combined in it depending on its mechanical properties, such as ductility, welding and hardness. Steel sheets have a low percentage of carbon, which is usually less than 2, and the higher the amount of carbon in steel sheets, the lower their ductility and their resistance.

This product is produced in two different types, square and rectangular, both of which have different dimensions and are selected depending on the needs of the project. Another characteristic of steel sheets is their very high resistance to high and low temperatures, so that these sheets can withstand temperatures of +1000 degrees Celsius and -200 degrees. In the following, we will introduce you to the specifications and types of steel sheets.

What is stainless steel?

Steels are divided into two categories, simple steel or stainless steel, where simple carbon steel has limited elements, meaning that apart from carbon, it also contains silicon, manganese, sulfur and phosphorus. Now, if elements like chromium are added to iron, stainless steel is produced. Stainless steel or stainless steel, as its name suggests, is rust-proof and highly resistant to various types of corrosion. In addition, chromium turns into chromium oxide after combining with oxygen in the air. This layer cannot be seen with the eye, but this element creates a layer that creates a barrier between the air and the metal, keeping the steel safe and healthy.

All kinds of steel sheets

In the classification of this product, the sheets are divided based on the alloy. There are several series of steels, including the 300 and 400 series. But the most famous and common steel in the market is the 300 series, which is stainless and is divided into different types such as 304, 305, 316, 321, 347, which among all 304 cases are more consuming than others.

This is despite the fact that the use of 400 series steel is a little different and it can mostly be seen in everyday life. For example, 420 steel is used to make cutlery and 430 series steel is used for decoration. In general, this metal has good malleability and because of the elements in this sheet, it has a cheaper price than 300 series steel.

300 series steel sheet

  • 301 steel sheet: One of the important features of 301 sheet is its high malleability and flexibility. The welding ability of this product is also desirable.
  • 302 steel sheet: This type of sheet is very resistant and has shown good resistance to corrosion.
  • 303 steel sheet: 303 steel sheet has more amounts of sulfur and phosphorus and hence has better formability.
  • 304 steel sheet: 304 steel has 18% chromium and 8% nickel and is also known as 18/8 steel sheet.
  • 304L steel sheet: the same 304 steel with a lower percentage of carbon, which is suitable for welding.
  • 309 steel sheet: It is one of the most popular types of steel sheet that has a very good heat resistance.
  • 316 steel sheet: In addition to chromium and nickel, 316 steel also has molybdenum. That is, it has 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. 316 stainless steel is also called marine grade and therefore it is widely used in shipbuilding and marine industries.
  • 316L steel sheet: the same as 316 steel with a lower percentage of carbon.
  • 317 steel sheet: It is one of the types of stainless steel that has favorable properties due to its high molybdenum percentage.
  • 321 steel sheet: It has properties close to 304 steel, which has good welding properties.

400 series steel sheet

  • 405 steel sheet: It is one of the 400 grade steel sheets that is used for welding.
  • 408 steel sheet: It has high resistance to heat and weak resistance to corrosion.
  • 409 steel sheet: the sheet used in car exhaust, which has a low price.
  • 410 steel sheet: has high resistance to wear and corrosion.
  • 416 steel sheet: This sheet has a high sulfur percentage, so it has high machinability and malleability.
  • 420 steel sheet: These sheets are used in everyday life, for example, in making cutlery.
  • 430 steel sheet: it has very good plasticity and is therefore used in making decorative items.
  • 440 steel sheet: due to its high carbon, it has a very good resistance to rust and is used in household appliances.
  • Sheet 446: Suitable for working at high temperatures.

What is the use of steel sheet?

Steel sheets have become one of the most widely used sheets in the market today due to their unique features and benefits. Among the types of applications of this product, the following can be mentioned:

  • The roof of the building
  • Covering the body and roof of the elevator door
  • Making household appliances
  • Making large parts in shipbuilding and also making pumps
  • Construction of chemical tankers
  • Car, truck and airplane body construction
  • Making electrical appliances such as transformers

Steel sheet dimensions

This product is produced and supplied to the consumer market in various dimensions such as 1*2 and 2.50*1.25 meters, 2.44*1.22 meters, 1.5*3 meters, 6*1.5 meters and 6*2 meters. All the mentioned dimensions have different thicknesses ranging from 35 mm to 20 mm. Also, steel sheets have widths of 100, 125, and 150 cm, and are generally available in three sizes: 200×100, 250×125, and 122×244.

The following formula can be used to calculate the weight of the steel sheet.

Weight of steel sheet = length * width * thickness * density of steel sheet

This product is shiny, smooth, rust-proof and corrosion-resistant and is available in the market in two forms, rolls and sheets. Some of its important features can be stated as follows:

  • The steel sheet is available in the market in the form of glossy and matte steel sheets.
  • It is fireproof.
  • It is antacid.
  • It is coated.
